Filmmaker Statement Nicholas Meyer

  FST 201- Filmmaker Statement

My personal experience in film has been diverse if relatively unaccomplished. I have had a passion for film and filmmaking for as long as I can remember, however, I didn't actually start trying to make shorts until later in high school. I believe it was in the summer between my junior and senior year when my friends and I created a youtube channel and started making shorts for it. We didn't put a lot of time or effort into them, as we essentially made them up on the spot and filled them with humor we knew only we would find funny. We ended up making about half of a dozen of these shorts, and while I didn't learn a lot about the film making process, I ended up discovering a passion in making them. When I went to college I joined TeavlTv, and joined the Dub Dares group, which I am still apart of today. I didn't work with the technical aspects of it, but I often pitched ideas that were used on the show. My biggest take away from dub dares was finding a group of creative and unique people who were all very different than me, but we were brought together by similar interests and passions. In the spring semester of my freshman year, I worked with someone on campus to help him make a video for his upcoming wedding. We were introduced through some mutual friends, and when he asked them for a film major, they gave him my name. Initially, I felt unqualified for what he was asking me to do, as I had never shot or directed something by myself, nor had I ever edited on Adobe Premiere. Despite these set backs, I was able to shoot and edit a short video for his wedding that we both ended up very happy with. These experiences have only increased my drive to learn about filmmaking. In this class, I hope to expand my knowledge and understanding of the filmmaking process, especially the process of writing a screenplay then adapting it to screen. Within the next decade or so of my career, I would like to have accomplished writing and directing several shorts or features the screen, while using the artistic medium of filmmaking to also grow as a human being. In my personal life outside of film, I am an eagle scout and worked for the Durham Bulls baseball team as a broadcaster. These experiences helped me to grow as a person and understand who I am and who I want to become in time.
